I designer hanno lavorato in circostanze estremamente insolite negli ultimi mesi, rivolgendosi a un pubblico le cui vite sono cambiate radicalmente, e alla fine hanno anche dovuto mostrare le loro collezioni virtualmente o in ambienti molto intimi. 

Eppure la creatività sembra regnare. 

Per l'autunno 2021, le collezioni sono state in linea con i tempi abbracciando quella nuova voglia di vita all'aperto, preparandosi per una nuova ondata dei ruggenti anni '20, trovando stabilità nei LBDs e mantenendo la chiave del comfort anche nella maglieria di lusso.

• Paillettes
• Cosa si ottiene quando si sovrappongono paillettes su paillettes su paillettes? Il tipo di opulenza degli anni '20 e '80 che mette semplicemente di buon umore ogni ragazza. Un look scintillante ma coperto (questi non sono abiti per la sera, piuttosto la dichiarazione di uno stato d'animo): pensate a pantaloni lunghi, colli alti, giacche e abiti voluminosi. Dries Van Noten, Paco Rabanne, Valentino, Loewe e altri hanno skippato il minimalismo in favore di qualcosa di più ottimista e grandioso ma con un messaggio chiaro: fate risplendere la vostra luce, signore, il futuro deve essere luminoso.
• Sartoria
• Non c'è altro modo per dirlo: il look sartoriale è diventato smart. E i designer non hanno fatto le cose a metà: abbiamo i gilet, sopra i dolcevita, sotto le giacche, sotto i cappotti lunghi, sopra i pantaloni con cintura, e talvolta persino rifiniti con la cravatta. Questi insiemi non sono abbinati a décolleté o scarpe da ginnastica, ma a mocassini e scarpe da uomo. In altre parole, non si tratta di sovvertire i pezzi classici; è una ripresa letterale. Tory Burch, The Row, Prada e Peter Do stanno guidando la carica delle donne che amano la sartoria e le stratificazioni voluminose.
• Cropped
• La nuova silhouette che fa girare la testa a tutte arriva da giacche e top cropped. Questi look però sono eleganti e ben lontani dalle mini-t-shirt del 2000. Sofisticati e chic sul tailleur pantalone fucsia di Chanel o sul look maschile con un tocco in più di Peter Do, o ancora sul completo a due pezzi assolutamente femminile di Emilia Wickstead, i tagli crop quest’inverno  sono solo per ragazze eleganti.
• Midi
• Una teoria di vecchia data nella moda afferma che gli orli alti indicano prosperità economica, mentre quelli lunghi parlano di recessioni. Nel periodo precario che è stato il 2020, è stato infatti preponderante il secondo. A dimostrare questo credo ci sono anche lo stuolo di gonne midi che hanno dominato i look book e le presentazioni della stagione autunno inverno 2021/22. Sono pieghettate da Christian Dior, plissettate da Erdem, foderate e ad A da The Row e fluide da Partow, ma tutte arrivano a metà strada tra il ginocchio e la caviglia.
• Frange
• Gli amanti delle frange possono gioire per un'altra stagione di orli ondeggianti. Ci sono i cappotti di pelle ricoperti da frange punteggiate di diamanti di Nanushka, le maniche di Proenza Schouler e hanno lasciato il segno gli abiti in maglia di Salvatore Ferragamo.
• Cut out
• Potrebbe essere fin troppo facile parlare della tendenza peekaboo del 2021 vista l’ondata di look del genre sui media, sui tappeti rossi, sui magazine e i post virali e le storie di Instagram delle influencer, ma la realtà è che c'è di nuovo voglia di vestiti sfacciati, e un sottile taglio su forme pudiche è un modo considerato e adulto di giocare con l'idea. Vedi l'abito grigio altrimenti austero di Emilia Wickstead con i suoi dettagli cut-out sul busto o il bomber rosso sportivo di Givenchy con la sua vita incrociata.
• Strati
• Non siamo estranee agli strati, e le nuove idee sono sempre benvenute. Fortunatamente, i designer e i loro stilisti ci hanno dato molte ispirazioni su come combinare le cose questo autunno. Prendete il look di Tory Burch, dove un dolcevita, una camicia, un blazer, una cintura e una collana sono stati messi insieme a creare una versione moderna e sofisticata del tailleur. La stratificazione può essere spesso noiosa e ripetitiva in autunno, ma i designer hanno offerto soluzioni intelligenti che vanno ben oltre cappotto e maglione, giocando con tessuti trasparenti, proporzioni oversize e accessori a legare insieme il tutto.

Designers worked in exceedingly unusual circumstances, in a vacuum, catering to an audience whose lives are forever changed—and ultimately showed their collections virtually or in very intimate settings. And yet, creativity reigned. 

For fall 2021, the collections fell in line with the times by embracing that new outdoor après-ski life, prepping for a new-wave Roaring ’20s, finding stability in LBDs, and keeping comfort key in elevated knitwear.

• Sequins
• What do you get when you layer sequins on sequins on sequins? The kind of 1920s-meets-1980s opulence that just puts a girl in a good mood. The look is glimmering but covered up (these aren't club dresses; they're a statement on a mood)—think: long trousers, high necks, jackets, and voluminous dresses. Dries Van Noten, Paco Rabanne, Valentino, Loewe, and more skipped the minimalism in favor of something optimistic and grand with a clear message: Let your light shine, ladies, the future is looking bright.
• Tailored
• There's no other way to say it: The look in tailoring now is nothing short of smart. Designers aren't going halfway—button-downs are layered under vests, over turtlenecks, under jackets, under long coats, over trousers—and sometimes belted and finished with a tie. These ensembles are paired not with pumps or sneakers, but loafers and boyish shoes. In other words, this isn't about subverting classic pieces; it's a literal take. Tory Burch, The Row, Prada, and Peter Do are leading the charge for ladies who like to layer their loose tailoring—and then layer it some more.
• Crop
• And the new silhouette turning all the heads comes by way of cropped jackets and tops. These elegant, midriff-baring looks are far from the mini tees of your youth. Sophisticated and chic on a fuchsia pantsuit at Chanel or a menswear look with a twist at Peter Do, and on an utterly ladylike two-piece set at Emilia Wickstead, these short takes are for posh girls only.
• Midi
• A long-standing theory in fashion: High hemlines indicate economic prosperity, while long styles convey downturns. In the precarious time that was 2020, it was overwhelmingly the latter. Here to demonstrate this credo are the bevy of midi skirts that dominated the look books and virtual presentations for the fall 2021 season. They are box-pleated at Christian Dior, knife-pleated at Erdem, A-lined at The Row, and flowy at Partow—but all reach midway between the knee and ankle.
• Fringes
• Fringe lovers can rejoice in yet another season of hemlines and embroideries. Fringe-flecked diamonds covered leather coats at Nanushka, balanced out sleeves at Proenza Schouler, and made their mark on sweater dresses at Salvatore Ferragamo.
• Cut Out
• It could be all too easy to write 2021's social media-driven peekaboo trend off as exclusive to red carpets and the celebrities who walk them, or viral posts and wild influencer Instagram moments, but the reality is that there's a want for sassy clothes again and the subtle slicing away of fabric from demure silhouettes is a considered, grown-up way of playing into the idea. See Emilia Wickstead's otherwise austere grey dress with its cut-out ribcage detailing or Givenchy's sporty red bomber with its crisscross waist for very brilliant examples.
• Layers
• We are no stranger to layers, and as such it's always welcome when new ideas come our way. Fortunately, designers and their stylists have many ideas for how we can mix things up this autumn. One of my favourite looks for the season was at Tory Burch where a roll-neck, collared shirt, blazer, belt and collared necklace were all layered together to create a streamlined modern take on suiting. Layering can often be boring and repetitive come autumn, but designers offered clever solutions beyond a coat and jumper, playing with sheer fabrics, oversized proportions and accessories to tie separates together.
