Quando si parla di gilet, il pensiero va subito a Glastonbury, piuttosto che a Gareth Southgate - in particolare, si pensa a Kate Moss a Glastonbury nel 2005 che indossava gilet aderenti con micro pantaloncini e camicie fluttuanti, e occasionalmente anche senza nulla sotto.
In quegli anni è stata proprio lei a rendere il gilet il suo capo distintivo.

Successivamente nel tempo ha sfoggiato tante versioni di questo capo, rendendolo sempre più iconico: da quello con le paillettes per il festival dell'Isola di Wight, a quelli sartoriali eleganti per gli eventi più mondani, fino alle iterazioni più bohémien con top fluttuanti per passeggiare per Londra. 

Li indossava in versioni grigie, nere, rosse e bianche, alcune volte erano lasciati aperti, altre erano abbinati a sciarpe sottili. A volte venivano indossati da soli e altre volte con magliette, gilet o anche bluse romantiche...
Insomma, Kate Moss ha recuperato il gilet e non lo ha più mollato - e, dopo una certa resistenza iniziale, tutti hanno seguito l'esempio. 

Ma ciò che ha di colpo reso Kate Moss così attraente nell’indossare il vecchio panciotto è stata tutta nella scelta dello stile e nella sua capacità di giocare con il contesto in cui generalmente ci aspettiamo di vedere un certo capo: il gilet è infatti tradizionalmente associato al completo elegante mentre Kate lo indossava nella sua forma più pura come accessorio cool per i festival musicali. 

Un sistema per distinguersi dalla massa ed allo stesso tempo anche un modo semplice di alzare il livello di un outfit, indossandolo, ad es., con un paio di pantaloni eleganti per la sera.

C'è qualcosa di irriverente ed allo stesso irrimediabilmente attraente nel prendere un pezzo così legato all'élite e giocare con il suo significato.

Per il 2020, il gilet è tornato. Ed è chiaro ora che l'industria della moda è finalmente pronta ad accoglierlo come si deve. 

Alla sfilata primavera / estate 2020 di Saint Laurent, ad es, Kaia Gerber indossava un ensamble ispirato proprio al look iconico di Kate Moss: un minuscolo gilet nero e micro shorts abbinati.  Completo di stivali alti fino al ginocchio, una versione più raffinata dei wellington della supermodella.

When it comes to waistcoats, think Glastonbury, not Gareth Southgate - specifically, think Kate Moss at Glastonbury in 2005. Cut tight to the body and worn with micro shorts, billowing shirts and occasionally with nothing underneath at all.

She made the waistcoat her signature piece. She chose fun sequinned versions for the Isle of Wight festival, sleek tailored styles for society evening events and bohemian incarnations with floaty tops for wandering around London. 

She wore grey, black, red and white versions, some were left open, others were styled with skinny scarves. Sometimes they’d be worn solo and other times with T-shirts, vests or perhaps a romantic shirt. 

Moss reclaimed the waistcoat and never left it – and, after initial resistance, everybody followed suit.

The thing that made Kate Moss’ take on the waistcoat so appealing was in the styling and her ability to play with the context in which we typically expect to see a piece. 

The waistcoat is traditionally associated with eveningwear and here was Kate wearing it in its purest form as a shrunken vest to music festivals. It was also an easy way of looking dressed up if you threw it on with a pair of trousers for the evening.

There is something irreverent about taking a piece so linked with the elite and playing with its meaning.

And for 2020, the waistcoat is back. And it is clear now that the fashion industry is finally on board.

At the Saint Laurent spring/summer 2020 show, Kaia Gerber wore a very Moss-inspired early-Noughties look – a tiny black vest and matching micro shorts. She even completed her ensemble with a pair of knee-high boots, a more refined take on the supermodel’s wellingtons.
