LOOKS: The Utilitarian Aesthetic is What You Need to See You Through Fall in Style

Trench, giubbotti bomber, marsupi, anfibi, tute, tasche XL, chiusure con lacci, cerniere a vista e tonalità terrose: non c'è dubbio che il mood attuale della moda vada sempre più incontro a look davvero da vivere ed a scarpe in cui si può veramente camminare .
Le passerelle autunno-inverno 2019-20 erano infatti piene di capi che non lesinavano la praticità. Il trench è stato reinventato ovunque. Anche il denim nelle sue tonalità più scure ha avuto un ruolo importante. Così come il kaki, presente su total look ma anche abbinato con altri colori.

Ecco perché il look utility sarà prioritario per passare questo autunno/inverno in grande stile.

• Look comunque eleganti
• Parlare di '"estetica utilitaristica" probabilmente evoca immagini di abiti tutt'altro che eleganti. In fondo non c'è niente di chic nella praticità, giusto? Sbagliato. Anfibi, una tavolozza di colori tenui e terrosi e silhouette ampie possono apparire molto raffinati. La chiave è con cosa li si abbina. Un capo sartoriale, ad esempio, potrebbe essere proprio quello che serve per rendere un paio di anfibi adeguati al lavoro. Allo stesso modo, una gonna a matita controbilancerà una camicia color kaki, mentre una camicetta di seta ravviverà una giubbotto baggy.
• Scarpe con le quali camminare
• Mentre le (orribili) trainers sono senza dubbio un gusto acquisito, comode scarpe da ginnastica, mocassini e stivali, - che sono tutti in linea con l'orientamento dell'industria della moda verso scarpe sempre più indossabili-  sono una gioia da indossare oltre ad essere facili da trovare nei negozi high e low cost.
• Pratico non significa noioso
• La nozione di abiti comodi in materiali pratici e accessori utili non urla "eccitazione", è vero. Ma i nuovissimi pezzi utility in kaki, ecru, cammello e blu si prestano molto bene ad essere “jazzati” con labbra rosse, una sciarpa di seta o una scarpa decorata.
• Mood parigino
• Se cercate l’ispirazione per attingere a un'estetica utility, puntate direttamente alla moda francese. Se c'è una cosa che le parigine fanno in modo eccellente, è il trasformare qualcosa di pratico e basic in un must have.
  Caso in questione: la giacca utility. Stratificata su una tuta nera e abbinata ad accessori color cuoio e anfibi, sarà un capo che vorremo indossare per tutta la stagione. 
• La funzionalità può essere super elegante 
• Istintivamente supponiamo che gli articoli più eleganti che possediamo siano anche i meno pratici. Ma, come sempre più spesso accade, stile e sostanza non si escludono a vicenda (o almeno, non sempre). Giacche che tengono davvero al caldo, materiali che respingono veramente l'acqua e pantaloni con tasche funzionali non sono più considerati l'antitesi dell'eleganza.

Trench coats, bomber jackets, bum bags, chunky boots, button down shirts, boiler suits, XL pockets, drawstring fastenings, zips and earthy hues: there's no question that fashion's current mood favours clothes you can live in and shoes you can walk in.  

What's more, the fall-winter 2019-20 catwalks were brimming with clothes that didn't skimp on practicality. The trench coat was reimagined everywhere. Denim in dark wearable shades also featured heavily. So did khaki, from top-to-toe looks to jumpsuits and dresses over trousers. 

Here's why a utilitarian aesthetic will be a priority to pass this fall / winter in style.

• Looking polished is still possible
• Talk of a 'utilitarian aesthetic' likely conjurs images of clothes that are anything but sleek. There's nothing polished about practicality, right? Wrong. Chunky boots, a muted, earthy colour palette and roomy silhouettes can look very refined. The key is what you wear them with. A piece of tailoring, for example, might be just what you need to make a pair of utility boots appropriate for work. Similarly, a pencil skirt will counterbalance a khaki shirt and a silk blouse will smarten up an anorak
• Shoes you can walk in
• While (the horrible) ‘ugly trainers' are undoubtedly an acquired taste, comfy sneakers, loafers and military boots, which are all in keeping with the fashion industry's sway towards wearable - and walkable - shoes, are a joy to wear as well as being easy to find on the high street.
• Practical doesn't mean boring
• The notion of comfortable clothes in practical materials and useful accessories doesn't scream 'excitement'. But utilitarian pieces in khaki, ecru, camel and navy lend themselves very well to being jazzed up with a red lip, a silk neck scarf or an embellished loafer. 
• Channel Parisian cool
• For inspiration for tapping into a utilitarian aesthetic, look no further than French fashion. If there's one thing Paris' most stylish do excellently, it's turning something practical and basic into something you just have to have. Case in point: the army jacket. Layered over a black jumpsuit and paired with tan accessories and clumpy footwear, it's what we want to wear all season long.  
• Functionality can be super stylish 
• We instinctively assume that the most stylish items we own are the least practical. But, as is increasingly the case, style and substance are not mutually exclusive. Jackets that actually keep you warm, materials that really repel water and trousers with functioning pockets are no longer considered the antithesis of chic.
