TRAVEL DIARY: Meteora

Ultimo post sulle mie vacanze in Grecia: stavolta voglio parlarvi dell’unica gita nell’entroterra che abbiamo fatto:

destinazione Meteore! 

Non nego che, anche se ero molto curiosa di andarle a visitare, all’inizio un po’ mi dispiaceva dovermi allontanare dal mare (considerando che passavo dalle 3 alle 4 ore al giorno in acqua), ma una volta arrivati ho dovuto cambiare completamente idea: è uno dei posti più incredibili che abbia mai visto (non a caso fanno parte della lista dell’Unesco)!

Si trovano in Tessaglia, nel bel mezzo della Grecia continentale, immerse in un paesaggio che ha del surreale e sembra uscito da uno scenario fantastico (e che purtroppo rende ben poco in foto) formato da imponenti “faraglioni” di roccia scura levigata sulla cima dei quali ogni tanto spunta un monastero (le metore, appunto).

  Last posts about my holiday in Greece: this time I want to talk of the only detour we have made:

 Meteora destination! 

To be sincere really at first, even if I was very curious about, I was a bit sorry to get away from the sea even just for few days (considering that I was swimming from 3 to 4 hours a day). 
But once I got there I had to completely change my mind: that is one of the most incredible places I have ever seen (not by chance they are part of the UNESCO list)!
They are located in Thessaly, in the midst of continental Greece, immersed in a surreal landscape that seems came out of a fantasy scenery (unfortunately you can’t fully realize it from the pictures...) made of imposing dark"stacks" rocks on the top of them every now and then rises a monastery (the meteoras, in fact).

La cosa assurda è che, dato che il paesaggio della Grecia (continentale ed isole) è più o meno tutto simile, caratterizzato da montagne non molto alte e per lo più verdi che si susseguono, queste formazioni rocciose non si capisce perché si trovino lì, tanto sono strane e diverse da tutto il resto!
Al centro delle meteore c’è un paese, Kalambaka, dove abbiamo alloggiato, dal quale è possibile raggiungere facilmente i vari monasteri.
Inizialmente erano 24, oggi ne sono rimasti solo 7 di cui sono 5 sono visitabili. Alcuni si raggiungono più facilmente con delle scalinate mentre altri richiedono una mezza arrampicata in sentieri boscosi, in ogni caso scarpe chiuse e comode sono d’obbligo perché c’è da faticare comunque un pochino.

The absurd thing is that since the landscape of Greece (continental and islands) is more or less all the same, characterized by mountains not very high and mostly green, you really can’t understand why these rock formations are there, so strange and different they are !
At the center of the meteoras there is a town, Kalambaka, where we stayed, from which it is possible to reach the various monasteries. 
Initially there were 24 of them, today there are only 7 of which 5 are visitable. Although some can be reached more easily with staircases while others require half-climbing wooded trails, closed and comfortable shoes are a must because in any case there is a bit of work to do.

All’interno dei monasteri uomini e donne devono avere spalle e ginocchia coperte, ma in ogni caso offrono gratuitamente all’entrata dei teli da metter sopra i vestiti (però dato che centinaia di persone passano lì ogni giorno e per lo più sono tutti sudaticci, io li sconsiglierei).
I monasteri sono senz’altro interessanti ma il panorama che si gode dalla punte delle  rocce è davvero mozzafiato, soprattutto al tramonto!
Insomma, secondo me , se le isole Ionie sono la parte più bella della Grecia marittima questa è senz’altro il punto più bello dell’entroterra, è un’esperienza che  consiglio davvero a tutti (magari un pò meno se soffrite di vertigini) c’è da rimanere senza fiato dallo spettacolo che offre!

Inside the monasteries men and women should have their shoulders and knees covered, even if they offer free clothes at the entry to put on your clothes just in case (but since they are visited by hundreds of people every day and most are pretty sweaty, I would not try them...).
The monasteries are definitely interesting but the view that you enjoy from the top of the rocks is really breathtaking, especially at sunset!
In short, in my opinion, if the Ionian Islands are the most beautiful part of Maritime Greece this is certainly the most beautiful spot in the hinterland, it is a really enjoyable experience (especially if you do not suffer dizziness) there is to be astonished in front of it!
