SS 2020 FASHION TRENDS: Prints & Patterns

TENDENZE PRIMAVERA/ESTATE 2020: Stampe e Fantasie

-ITA-

Prints and patterns is everywhere too.

From leopard to soft floral and and everything in between, pattern is being used in every aspect of design for the upcoming trends.

From fresh updates to a few favorites (polka dots and gingham) to far out florals evocative of your grandma's chic '70s-era wallpaper, these prints are poised to dominate our Instagram feeds.
Caution: Minimalists may want to look away.

  • Psychedelic Florals
  • Sure, florals for spring may not be groundbreaking, but this late '60s/early '70s take on the print feels arguably refreshing. Get ready to see as many groovy cuts (think kick-flare pants in velvet, boho maxi dresses, and mod-like miniskirts) as you will '70s era-inspired prints like the larger-than-life abstract florals seen at Christopher Kane.
  • Pinstripes
  • This suiting staple is getting wings of its own. While we can still expect to find a myriad of classic pinstripe blazers and trousers, we're ready for the onslaught of other silhouettes taking on the print.
  • keep your pinstripe picks from looking too business formal and mix it up with more casual pieces like colorful striped sweaters, sneakers, or a mesh layering tee.
  • Tropical Prints
  • It seemed only appropriate that Versace closed out its spring/summer 2020 show with J.Lo modeling a reimaged version of her iconic plunging Grammy's dress. The brand's latest collection heavily featured tropical prints, a theme shared by a handful of other designers this past fashion week. From palm prints to hibiscus florals, you can operate on island time and any time in this trending pattern.
  • Gingham
  • This isn't the first spring we've been hung up on gingham, and it certainly won't be the last. But this time around, keep the picnic reminiscent versions at home. This season’s take on the print puts pastels and contrasting cuts at the forefront. Whether you choose to dress head-to-toe in gingham or opt for a chic two-piece set, or let it sit in as a subtle element, don't pass up on the print come spring.
  • '60s Wallpaper
  • Retro prints ruled the runways—bringing both major color and pattern to all the top collections. Vintage wallpaper (and couch) prints were channeled in the form of suiting at Prada and Marc Jacobs. Christopher Kane opted for a more psychedelic wallpaper print in the form of spring dresses, while Etro and Alberta Ferretti delivered a more bohemian-print option. A colorful, abstract print dress that captures the playfulness of '60s wallpaper in sartorial form. Just add sandals and go.
  • Polka Dots
  • the polka dot trend shows no sign of slowing. The innovative duo that is Dries Van Noten and Christian Lacroix found a place for the polka dot on a maxi skirt-and-simple tank pairing, topped off with a head feather, while Balmain embraced volume for the enchanting print, and Wes Gordon at Carolina Herrera went fitted, '90s, and sheer for one of his takes on dots. Freshen up the trend by opting for an enlarged polka-dot print as seen at Carolina Herrera.

  5. Hey Silvia, how you doing?! Hope this week was good and at least you were able to catch a bit of sun and fresh air. Same situation in Spain but I'm still avoiding city since people went out massively haha.

I loved prints, and you made a very interesting selection and proposals. Actually as a graphic designer this is one of the fields that you can specialized and develop tons of works since this is always something that is bringing new things to the market, not only in clothes but also in interior design area and many others....

I loved that nowadays the possibilities are endless and you can even mix prints and create strange but curious combinations. If I'm honest I love them, but I feel that my style changed since people in Spain tends to dress with neutral block colors and that changed me and influenced me haha. But one of my resolutions this year is to wear more colors and prints for sure!

All the best and thanks as usual for your support :)
