Ammettiamolo:la moda non è mai esistita "tanto per".

Sebbene sia facile immaginare un team di stilisti che si riunisce per preparare ciò che sarà di moda, la realtà è che ci sono una moltitudine di fattori che esercitano il loro potere sul ciclo delle tendenze, dalle influenze della cultura pop e dei social media agli effetti meno evidenti dell'attuale momento politico ed economico.

E diciamo che il 2025 ci sta dando molto da valutare.

Naturalmente, il concetto di moda come specchio della società non è nuovo.

Per secoli è stata utilizzata come strumento di dissenso politico, di espressione radicale di sé e di senso di appartenenza.

Che ci piaccia o meno ammetterlo, l'abbigliamento che indossiamo dice molto di più su chi siamo e su ciò che apprezziamo di quanto potremmo mai esprimere a parole, dai girovita che rivelano in quale generazione rientriamo al modo in cui puntiamo a vestirci con una certa estetica per entrare in sintonia con chi “ci capisce”.

Può essere anche un forte indicatore dello stato dell'economia.

L'indice degli orli è una teoria di lunga data secondo la quale le lunghezze delle gonne aumentano e diminuiscono in base alla forza dell'economia e, sebbene non sia una regola ferrea, il mercato azionario continua a essere sensibile ai nostri sentimenti e alle nostre emozioni tanto quanto il ciclo delle tendenze, dimostrando che la moda non è mai stata solo moda.

È sempre stata un barometro del nostro umore collettivo.

Of course, the concept of fashion as a mirror to society is nothing new.

For centuries, it has been used as a tool for political dissent, radical self-expression, and a sense of belonging.

Whether or not we like to admit it, the clothing we wear says more about who we are and what we value than we could ever begin to express with words, from the waistlines that expose what generation we fall into to the way we aim to dress for certain aesthetics to fit in with those who "get it."

It can be a strong indicator of the state of the economy too.

The hemline index is a long-held theory that skirt lengths rise and fall according to the strength of the economy, and while it's not a hard-and-fast rule, the stock market continues to be as sensitive to our feelings and emotions as the trend cycle, proving that fashion has never been about just fashion.

It's always been a barometer for our collective mood.
