Always romantic, the puffed sleeve has become something of a wardrobe mainstay in recent seasons, but the SS21 collections dialled down the girlishness and brought a tougher attitude to this detail.

The whimsical designer Cecilie Bahnsen rendered her billowy shirts in black, which gave them an altogether more fierce mood.

At Loewe, designer Jonathan Anderson played with puffed proportions, with billowy sleeves featuring on shirt dresses, and reinvented as drop-waist peplum hemlines on functional cotton-twill coats.

Isabel Marant, meanwhile, offered curved-sleeve cropped shirts and button-up poet’s blouses, while Gabriela Hearst showed utilitarian shirt dresses while Altuzarra turned the volume up on the traditional trench with a puffed sleeve that transformed even this classic piece into a contemporary must-have.
