The Preppy Style Story

 La Storia dello Stile Preppy

Tra la fine del 1890 e l'inizio del 1900, lo stile "preppy" era una sorta di status symbol, indossato dai ragazzi ricchi che frequentavano le scuole preparatorie al college e della Ivy League - da cui il nome.

Camicie button down, maglioni e mocassini facevano parte dei loro guardaroba, e negli anni 30 questo stile ha iniziato a diffondersi anche tra le donne che frequentavano i college. 

Una volta che il primo paio di "Lady Levi's" fu rilasciato nel 1934, i jeans diventarono quindi uno dei principali capi dello stile preppy anche dal alto femminile e non ne sono più usciti.

Arrivati agli anni '80, lo stile preppy iniziò poi a trasformarsi in quello che conosciamo, grazie soprattutto a un libro chiamato “The Official Preppy Handbook”. 

L’intenzione originale era una sorta di manuale divertente che ironizzasse su questo tipo di abbigliamento, ma alla fine ha venduto più di un milione di copie, ispirando le persone ad iniziare a indossare pantaloni cachi, gonne e blazer scozzesi e maglioni annodati sulle spalle. 

E questi capi, che erano il segno distintivo di una classe sociale privilegiata negli anni '50, si diffusero rapidamente tra le masse, grazie anche all'ascesa di brand come Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein e Lacoste. 

Lo stile preppy divenne così popolare che, sebbene lo stile rocker fosse il modo perfetto per ribellarsi a questa tendenza così “abbottonata”, consideriamo ancora Brooke Shields e la principessa Diana - con i loro dolcevita e blazer scozzesi - come icone "ribelli"della moda del decennio. 

La fine degli anni '90 ha portato una nuova svolta, stavolta rimpicciolendo i capi. La vita dei pantaloni diventa più bassa, i bootcuts sono i jeans più di moda e Britney Spears contribuì ulteriormente a lanciare il look da “studentessa sexy”, con tanto di gonnellina a pieghe e calzettoni. 

E anche mentre il grunge oversize tornava prepotentemente di moda durante tutto il nuovo decennio, alcuni elementi preppy come le camicie scozzesi e le maglie annodate (questa volta, intorno alla tua vita) rimasero sempre presenti. Era questo lo stile preppy del nuovo millennio, con J.Crew in testa. 

La gente voleva i maglioni nautici con lo  scollo arrotondato ma si immaginava il look di un membro del cast di Dawson's Creek più che quello di uno studente di una prestigiosa università. 

Quindi, le cose sono diventate man mano sempre più fashion-girl approved - e per fashion-girl, si intende che anche Anna Wintour è diventata una fan dello stile. 

E alla fine è arrivato un nuovo cambiamento, ora che l'athleisure è entrato in scena.

Back in the late 1890s and early 1900s, “preppy” style was a sort of status symbol, worn by wealthy guys who went to preparatory and Ivy League schools — hence the name. 

Brooks Brothers button-downs, knit sweaters, and loafers were all part of their closet must-haves, and by the 1930s, college women were in on it, too. 

Once the first pair of “Lady Levi’s” were released in 1934, jeans became a major preppy style, and we really never looked back.

Once we reached the ‘80s, preppy style as we now know it really began to happen — thanks to a book called The Official Preppy Handbook. Originally, it was meant to be humorous and tongue-in-cheek, but it sold more than a million copies, inspiring people to start wearing khakis, plaid skirts and blazers, and knotting sweaters over their shoulders unironically. 

While these clothes had still been a sign of privilege in the ‘50s, they were being made for the masses now, thanks to the rise of Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein, and Lacoste. 

Prep was popular, and while going the rocker route was the perfect way to rebel against this buttoned-up norm, we still consider Brooke Shields and Princess Diana — with their turtlenecks and tartan blazers — to be fashion icons of the decade. 

The late ‘90s brought a new, shrunken twist. Pants styles were lower, boot-cuts were in, and Britney Spears turned looking like a sexy school girl, complete with a white button-down and pleated skirt, into a major thing. 

Plus, while oversized grunge definitely had a moment during this decade, you can argue that some preppy elements — like all the plaid and knotting shirts (this time, around your waist) were still there. It was prep, new millennium-style, and J.Crew was hitting its stride. 

People wanted those nautical rolled-neck sweaters and envisioned themselves looking like a cast member of Dawson’s Creek . 

Things became more and more fashion-girl approved — and by fashion-girl, we mean even Anna Wintour was a fan. 

But eventually, another shift occurred, and now athleisure made its way onto the scene.
